The Secretaiy of State for In'lia. communicates the following :—
The utter failure which had attended the Turkish advance on the
Euphrates line against our position near Sbaiba and which culminated in
their rout has had a marked effect on the activity and enterprise of the other
two columns on the Tigris and Karim, the latter of which had been threaten
ing Ahwaz. In order to check its movements and to secure the pipe line of
the Anglo-Persian Oil Company we advanced against the enemy’s camp
which had been located at lllah on the Kharkheh.
Unfortunately a rapid rise of this river and a series of severe sandstorms
delayed our movements, and before we were able to come up the Turks
succeeded in making good their retirement on Amarah, thus evacuating all
Persian territory in Arabistan. Our furtive operations were therefore con
fined to the infliction of punishment upon those local tribes which had been
assisting the Turks. Of these the Beni Mensur Arabs at once asked for
terms and have been called upon to surrender a number of rifles and to pay
a fine. The Beni Turuf and Beni Tanim Arabs, who had committed several
acts of treachery and had murdered some of our wounded, offered some
slight resistance which was easily overcome. Several of their strongholds
and a good deal of their property were destroyed and a number were
killed.

The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].
The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.
The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).
Correspondents include: General Sir John Nixon; Major-General Charles Vere Ferrers Townshend; the Viceroy of India; officials of the Admiralty; officials of the War Office.
