Turkish forces under Fubhi Bey,late Vali of Basra,surren

The enemy defeated at and below Basra had retreated
to the neighbourhood of Nasireh on the Euphrates and
during tho next few weeks this place and a new position
taken up above Khrna were largely reinforced by Tutkish
troops from Baghdad and by local gatherings of hostile
Arabs. Although active operations were confined to gr’gfr '
small affairs in which we were uniformly successful
signs of unrest among the tribes,caused mainly by the
advance of Turkish forces into Persian territory, and
the cutting of the pipe line near Oraneh and ?ais,con
vinced the Government of India and the Cabinet that fur^
ther reinfer cements were urgently needed. A seednd
Division and a Cavalry Brigade were accordingly odderei
to concentrate in Mesopotamia:two brigades,including
a Ter itorial battalion and Field Battery,coming from
India and the third from Egypt.
At this season the rivers were rising and the coun
try round Kama and between Basra and the Euphrates
gradually became flooded.This made us stronger at Eurna,
Ttfiere gunboats could assist in repelling attacks,and
small force •^hTCK^had been sent for the protection of'

The successor to the Court of Directors. , collected for the Mesopotamian Commission which was convened to examine the causes of the besieging and surrender of the Indian Expeditionary Force in Kut-el-Amara [Al Kūt].
The papers cover a range of topics and include the following: General Townshend's assessment of the situation after the Battle of Kut-el-Amara; a précis of correspondence relating to the origins and development of the Mesopotamia expedition; and a collection (ff 396-399) of private telegrams between the Secretary of State for India and the Viceroy, prior to the outbreak of war with Turkey.
The file also includes some tables showing the strength of General Townshend's force at Ctesiphon (folio 111) as well as the Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' (In Mesopotamia) Troops of the 6th Poona Division (folio 114).
