without unnecessary delay. Captain Kmentt, long engaged with success m petroleum boring, took
out with him suitable machinery, to the value of ^5,000, which, after great difficulty, owing to the rough
nature of the country, has reached Daliki. Boring for oil commenced on the 16th March. The Engineer '
reports that there is good prospect of favourable results. If petroleum be found in large quantities

, either at Daliki or Shushter (at which latter place it would
have the advantage of the water transport of the Karun river), export would be easy, the local
demand not inconsiderable, and the Corporation would undoubtedly reap considerable profit.
2. Coal.—T he discovery of coal, of good quality and in accessible situations, is naturally
a point of extreme importance. It has been found in various directions, of excellent quality,
the percentage of ash in some of the coal being less than in any on the English market. At present,
all that the Corporation has been able to arrange is the acquisition from private owners of the
coal-fields of Shemsek and Hiv, both within easy reach of the capital, Teheran. General Houtum-
Schindler has arranged for the working of these mines in economical fashion, and he is of opinion
that they will monopolise the Teheran demand, and afford a certain reasonable profit to the
Corporation. The future development of the demand is likely to be great.
3. Copper. Prolonged negotiations have been in progress with the Minister of Mines
and private individuals for the acquisition of the copper mines of the.Sabzvar district, which are
known to be rich. Others which belong to the Corporation under their Concession, one hundred and
fifty miles nearer Teheran, on the Sabzvar road, will be worked shortly. The arrangements will not be
completed regarding Sabzvar until the return to the capital of Mr. Ferguson, the Engineer deputed to
report upon them, and who has had large experience of copper working in Spain. The Board believe
that in this metal a source of wealth to the Corporation will, with patient development, be found.
The analyses of copper obtained by the engineers have proved to be extremely rich, and the deposits
very numerous. The demand for copper in Persia is large.
4 . Quieksilvep.-Owing to the great quantity of snow in the mountains north-west
of Teheran, no Quicksilver prospecting has, up to now, been possible. Mr. Ferguson is now, as
previously stated, about to proceed to the neighbourhood of Zenjan to examme the reported deposits,
and should the information regarding quicksilver prove accurate, its working will be highly
profitable.
5. Oxide Of Iron (red ochre).—This is found in great quantities on the island of
Hormuz, of fair quality. The full mineral rights on this island, inclusive of rocksalt, have been
lately acquired from His Imperial Majesty by the Corporation, and arrangements have already
been made to ship the red oxide used for the manufacture of paint to London, and the salt
to India.

- Content
These papers, which are spread across two volumes, contain material relating to mines and mining rights in Persia, and more specifically to the affairs of the Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation Limited, of which George Nathaniel Curzon was a director.
The first part (26 March 1890-27 March 1892) is mostly comprised of received correspondence regarding Curzon's appointment to the board of directors of the recently formed Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation and the company's interests in mines and mining rights in Persia. Also included in this part are facsimiles of company correspondence and reports, forwarded to Curzon by the company's Secretary, Lewis Hamilton, concerning the company's affairs, with discussion of existing and potential mining sites in Persia. Notable correspondents in this part include Edward Albert Sassoon of David Sassoon and Company, as well as fellow board members and other representatives and associates of the Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation such as Lewis Hamilton, Sir Lepel Henry Griffin, and Albert Houtum-Schindler.
The second part (1 July 1889-20 December 1892) consists of Curzon's own handwritten notes plus a selection of reports, printed papers, newspaper cuttings, and correspondence, not only on mining and mining rights in Persia, but also regarding the affairs of the Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation. It includes a list of those mines that are privately-owned and those that have been given in lease by the Persian Government, as well as details of Persian mines that are at the disposal of the Imperial Bank of Persia. Papers directly relating to the Persian Bank Mining Rights Corporation include copies of a memorandum and articles of association, as well as circulars, balance sheets, and a copy of extensive correspondence between the company and Houtum-Schindler. Also included is a copy of the general report of another company, the Persian Road and Transport Company, dated March 1891.
Among the papers are four plans: three of the Elburz [Alborz] mountains (folios 33, 36 and 45) and one showing transport routes across Persia (folio 266).
The German language material consists of three book titles cited by Houtum-Schindler.
