Foreign Secret. ^ our teleg^m of 29th May and War Office telegram
to ( ommander-in-( 9def, No. 59390, dated 1st dune. South Persia Rifles.
His Majesty’s Government have decided to place all Br^i^h troops in South
Persia under command of single officer of rank of Brigadier-General to be
sent from India and to act under instructions of 'lour Fxcellency’s Govern
ment. II you see no objection, please take immediate steps to select and
despatch officer accordingly. His command will not include South Persia
Rifles, which will remain as at present a Persian force under Svkes as
Inspector-General, but it will be open to him to apply to Sykes for co
operation of South Persia Rifles whenever he thinks necessary. Above
arrangement may be regarded as provisional only, pending consideration of
whole question of policy in Persia about to be undertaken by His Majesty’s
Government in immediate future, when full weight will be given to views
which 'four Kxcellency has so often urged.
