A letter from Samuel Manesty, Resident in Bussora [Basra], to Marquess Wellesley, Governor-General of Bengal, sent from Maghil [Al Ma’qil] and dated 15 May 1803.

The letter concerns an incident in Bussora arising from the detention of an Egyptian woman living with a British sailor (see IOR/L/PS/9/76/299).

Included in the letter are:

  • An extract of a letter from Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdat [Baghdad], to Samuel Manesty, dated 5 May 1803, with an accompanying paper describing Jones’s actions in Bagdat on learning of the affair
  • A letter from Captain John White, the British sailor involved in the affair, to Samuel Manesty, sent from Bussora and dated 15 May 1803. White describes how he met the woman in Egypt.
