A copy of a letter from Samuel Manesty, Resident in Bussora [Basra], to Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], sent from Maghil [Al Ma’qil] and dated 15 October 1802.
The letter concerns the appointment of Aly Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. [‘Alī Pāshā al-Kahyah] as Governor of Bagdad, reporting that calm has prevailed in Bussora during the period of political instability in Bagdad. Manesty also reports the arrival of Assistant Surgeon Hine to take over from Dr James Short, surgeon at the Bagdad Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. , and forwards various correspondence, in particular concerning the death in Bombay [Mumbai] of Hajee Khaleel Khan [Ḥājī Muḥammad Khalīl Khān Qazvīnī], Persian [Iranian] Ambassador to India.
