An extract of a letter from Peter Tooke, East India Company Agent in Constantinople [Istanbul], to Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], dated 27 March 1801.

The letter concerns a labour shortage of ‘Tartars’ [couriers]. Tooke stresses the need to employ four couriers exclusively for carrying mail between Constantinople and Bagdad.
