Direction 180°, distance 5 miles, crossing
the beds of two torrents, a well and two
kanaats on the way. Village of 100
houses and 150 head of cattle. Close by
is Pirsufian
Direction 180°, distance 9 miles, pass small
watch-tower, to the west of which is Ka-
dimabad, afterwards another watch-
tower and a hillock shaped like a sitting
elephant. Houses 200, cattle 700 to 800.
Hence Sultanabad in direction of 320°,
Bulbulabad 40°.
Direction 180°, distance 11 miles, houses
50, cattle 60, inhabitants Turki.
Hence Sakhsabad 160°.
Direction 175°, distance 12| miles,
houses 50 to 60, inhabitants Turki.
On the way pass Akhoora on the east,
Husseinabad on west, and through
Hakimabad.
Direction 220°, distance 17 miles, houses
300, cattle 200, sheep and goats 1,000.
Direction 180°, distance f mile, houses 150,
cattle 100, sheep, &c., 500. Within 3 or
4 miles of Saidabad are situated the
following villages in the directions set
against their names : Khurrumabad
245°, Javen 130°, Johareen 180°,
Balaziyurt 200°, Deezan 100° east. In
the last mentioned village camels can
be obtained.
Direction 140°, distance 19f miles,
leaving a large mound of earth on left
and crossing a kanaat on the way.
Houses 150, cattle 200, sheep, &c., 800.
Direction 180°, distance 22 miles, pass
Mahomedabad and two large hillocks,
pointing 240° and 250°, Idrabad, a
kanaat, and the river Kharood.
Note .—The heights, as stated in the text, are only rough approximations from an
aneroid, the statistics taken from observation and the statements of the villagers, the
distances calculated by timing my horse’s walk.

Content

The volume consists of the printed notes taken by John David Rees, Under-Secretary to the Government of Madras From 1684-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Madras [Chennai] and southern India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. , during his journey between Kasveen [Qazvin] and Hamadan, Persia [Iran]. The notes were printed by the Government Press at Madras [Chennai], in October 1885.

The volume contains a map on folio 4 showing the route of Rees’s journey. At the end of the volume is an itinerary of the journey with details of distances and directions.

Foliation: the main foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the front cover with 1 and terminates at the inside back cover with 25; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. An additional printed pagination sequence is also present in parallel between ff 5-23.
