Slave traffic.— No reports of the slaves sent across the
Arab coast for sale were received during the year.
At the end of November last, a Baluchi negro slave
reported to the Director that his wife and three children
were owned by a British Indian subject living at Peshkan
near G-wadur and were being illtreated by him. He begged that
they should be freed. They were accordingly released and
came to Karachi and applied for the grant of a Manumission
certificate. The document was furnished by the Political
Agent Muscat.
In September t?;o male slaves took refuge with the
Officer Commanding troops at Jask. The owners who belonged
to the Karwan district, with fully armed followers requested
the Officer Commanding to release the slaves but he refused
unless the slaves went of their own accord. The owners
threatened that they would carry off others in exchange if
their slaves were not released. Thereupon the Officer
Commanding handed the slaves back to the owners who are
reported to have bribed him.
