TOWIH— Lat. , Long. ; Elrv.
A village in Astarabad, between Chasrnah-i-AK and Sawab, on the road from
Fulhad Mahalla to Astarabad. — (Morns.)
TRAKlJ (SfsTAN)— Lat. . , Long. ; Egev.
A wide tract of fine, arable land to the south of the Sistan basin and of the
boundary line, and west and south of Bandar Kamal Khan. It is studded
with the ruins of villages, but has long remained a waste, on which graze the
herds of Sistan and Balueh nomads. The whole is said to be irrigable by
the water of the Helmand, and of far greater fertility and value than the
lands of the basin, where fields and villages are constantly liable to destructive
inundation. It is, in fact, said to be worth more, i.e., aipable of supporting
a larger population, than the whole of inhabited Sistan. It is to the relin
quishment of this tract that the Persians object, and its possession would prob
ably leave them little to desire; for it would form a counterpoise in their
hands to the advantages enjoyed by the Afghans in the possession of the
lands on the right bank and a counter-attraction to the wavering population.
Up to 1S75 a grazing tax was levied from these lands ; but this has since
been discontinued.— [Napier.)
TUGHAT— Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A stage in Khurasan, 21 miles from Birjand, on the road toTabas.— [Mac

A village in the province of Astarabad, on the road from Jajarm to the
town of Astarabad— [Napier.)
TtJLKAL— Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A halting-place in Khurasan, 92 miles from Tabas, on the road thence to
Sfstan. The water is bad here, and there are no supplies.— [MacGregor)
TUMAN AGHA— Lat , Long. ; Elev. '.
A post on the border of the district of Jam, north-east Khurasan, for its
. protection against Afghans and Turkumans. It is a fine brick caravansarai on
the western (Persian, bank of the Hari Rud. It is situated on the old road,
along which the tralfic between Bukhara and Persia was carried on, and is
still m a habitable condition. Over the door is an inscription, stating that it
was built by Kysia Band, the daughter of Amir Taimur Kurkhan, and of his
wife Khyr Nisa. It is used as an outpost of 20 Plazara horsemen stationed
here, to bring the news to Muhsinabad whenever the Turkumans are
expected. There is a look-out post in the bed of the Hari Rud close to the
caravansarai.
Four stout poles have been driven into the ground, and a platform erected
on the top, as a look-out place for the sentry. This post has not been occu

the land in the bed of the stream.'— [Stewart, Napier.)
