A village in Khurasan, 49 miles from Tabas, on the road to Tun. There is
a sarai here, with g-ood water and some supplies.— [MacGregor.)

A valley in the Atak mountains, northern Khurasan, whose stream runs into
the Atrak river near Khurchan. The Atrak is there known by the name
of the “ Sumar-Su.”— [Petrusevitch.)

A village in Khurasan, on the road from Shahrud to Astarabad, and about 20
miles from the former town. It contains about 50 houses, and is situated
high up in the mountain of Shah Kuh, 1 mile from the junction of the
roads leading from Astarabad to Shahrud,—one by Ziarat, the other by the
Kuzluk pass.
Coal is found in considerable quantities in the vicinity of Task ; and a mine
has been worked and the coal carried to Ghaz, to supply the Prussian steamers.
The working of the mine ceased with the demand, the steamers being
supplied from some nearer source, or using Baku oil (petroleum).— [Napier.)

A defile in the Daraghaz khanate, with a village of the same name at its
eastern extremity. Leaving the village of Kala Yusuf Khan, on the
border of Radkan and Kuchan, the road enters this defile, and follows it
north-east for 4 miles. The defile is commanded all along; but the hills
are easy and of no great height. Guns have been taken through it On
reaching the village of Tatari, the defile opens, and there is a good stretch
of cultivation, half a mile wide and 2 or 3 miles in length.—(A^er.)

A village in Khurasan, 87 miles from Turshiz, on road to Shahrud
from which it is 84 miles distant. It is a small village ; but has a fort and
small gardens. Water good and plentiful. Provisions scarce
Stewart says that it is a collection of 18 small villages scattered about a
considerable valley. Each hamlet is small, and ^as “d h^g h
defences against the Turkomans, who raid here a good deal. {Ueilc,

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.
The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.
The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.
Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
