A village in northern Khurasan, about 50 miles north-west of Bujnurd, on

A village in the .tract of Khurasan, known as the Ulangi Shahi, on the
direct road from Shahdishi in the Kashaf-Rud and to the south. Sistanis

A village in Khurasan, 4 miles from Mihr, on the road to Mazinan,
and 45 miles west of Sabzawar. It is the only village on this part of the
route, a distance of 20 miles. It is a prettily situated village ; and near
it are several streams of excellent water flowing from the mountains.—■

A town of Khurasan and the capital of the district of Tursluz, by which
latter name it has generally hitherto appeared in maps. It is situated
210 miles from Herat, 155 miles from Birjand, 220 miles from Shahrud,
117 miles from Turbat-i-Shaikh Jam, and 30 miles north-east from furbat-
i-Haidari. It is a considerable walled town ; but the walls and ditches have
fallen into a state of complete disrepair. It contains, according to
Eerrier, 2,000 houses ; and, according to Stewart, 6,000 inhabitants; and is
surrounded by many flourishing villages. About 100 houses are inhabited
by Hindus from Multan; and they occupy a quarter where they conduct
business without molestatiofi or insult. The inhabitants are Persians. Ihe
trade of this place arrives chiefly from the importation of indigo and other
dyes from the west, and wool, cloth, and rice from Herat, and iron, wrought
into thick plates. A trifling quantity of European goods are brought from
Mazandaran by way of Shahrud, and from Gilan by way of Yazd. Ihe
prunes, generally known as i alu bukhara/ chiefly come from Sultanabad; and
raisins and other dried fruits are exported thence in large quantities. A
very large amount of silk is produced here and in the district, which
exported to Constantinople and the countries bordering the Caspian and
Black Seas. Very little, if any, silk is sent to western Europe, the price
of silk being actually higher in Persia than it is in Lyons and Marseilles—•

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.
The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.
The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.
Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
