A village in the Alghur subdivision of the Kam district of Khurasan, 82
miles north of Birjand. It is situated in an extensive plain, and is described
as a miserable place, but as having a good deal of wheat cultivation. There
is a dilapidated fort here of some strength. It consists of an enceinte,
100 yards by 60, with walls 40 feet high, 5 feet thick at top, and 30
feet at bottom, raised on the top of a mound, 15. feet high, and
it is not commanded. It could, therefore, no doubt, if put in repair, offer a
determined resistance to any attack, especially as, owing to the gate being
well protected by a traverse, it would be very difficult to blow it in. The
gateway is only live feet high, and is closed in an unique manner by a
hu°e, round stone, five feet in diameter and two feet thick, ivhich can
be rolled in front of the opening. Sihdih is one of the principal places of
manufacture of the celebrated Khurasan carpets, sharing its reputation in
this respect with the village of Duraksh, in the Zirkuh subdivision of
Biriand. The chief of both the village and the valley of Sihdih in 1872 was
named Mirza Husain, a man possessed of great wealth and influence
and a local reputation for hospitality. He kept, it was said, a granary
for charitable distribution, which was never allowed to become empty. He,
with thirty of the villagers, was a follower of Agha Khan at Bombay.—
