A villag-e in Khurasan, to the northward of Duruh, on the extreme eastern
inhabited frontier. It has an old fort, with some houses built outside; the
inhabitants numbering- about 300. It is a place of some little importance,
as it has a number of hamlets depending on it. Including the hamlets,
it has about 800 inhabitants altogether; but it is a wretched, ruined place.
Some of the inhabitants live at Haftad Kud {([. v.), 9 miles off, for a por
tion of the year and cultivate.— [Stewart.)

Extensive ruins in Khurasan, 85 miles from Mashhad, on the road to Herat.
They are said to extend for several miles. Two miles beyond is the
modem village and fort of Langar. Its name is derived from a tradition of
the country, that formerly a great portion of the plain was inundated, and
that Langar then served as a shelter for the boats. The villagers are almost
all of the sect of Nakhsbandi—a sect founded in the eighth century of the
Hijra by the celebrated Shaikh Biha-ud-din, Nakshband, who was born in
718, and died and was buried near Bukhara in 791 Hijra.— [Taylor, Clerk,
Hardy, Khanilcoff.)
LANGAR— Lat. 37° 31/ 6"; Long. 57° 14/ O''; Elev. ' [Stewart).
A village in the Bujnurd province of Khurasan, about 8 miles north-west of

LANGARAK, on INAYATABAD— Lat. Long. ; Elev.
A halting-place, 22 miles from Mashhad, on the road to Sarakhs by
Ak-Darband. There is no village here ; but fuel, forage, and water are

about 2 miles broad, and has a fine sketch of good soil capable of being
cultivated.— (Mac Greg or.)
