strongest he had seen in Khurasan. It had been deserted for many years;
but in 1868 the Persian Government had it rebuilt. The buildmg ol
this fort has been a great check to Turkuman raiding in the Khaf and Kam
districts. However, a successful raid was made in 1881, for which Kara
was transferred, as a punishment to the governor of Khaf for not having
prevented it, from that official to the governor of Bakharz. Karat was
built by the Taimuri tribe, and was chiefly inhabited by them. On the hi
above the fort are the ruins of another strong fort and a considerable town.
