northern limit. The Kala-i-Zaidan is situated on an eminence, surrounded
on all sides with thousands of fine houses in ruins. It has 12 towers, and con
tains within its walls 50 families. The Mil measures 55 feet in circumfer
ence at the base, 25 at the summit, and is 76 feet in height. It was built in
the form of a cylinder with a spiral staircase within, which described 3 com
plete circuits in its length. Its structure, however, is defective in having
no spinal column, which causes the work to overlap. The Mil, which has
many inscriptions in Cufic character on its interior, is built of kiln-baked and
glazed bricks ; as is also the fortress.— [Rozario.)
