In the reign of Fateh AH Shah, Allah Yar Khan of Jagatai held Munnan,
and a considerable tract of country around it. He was defeated by that
sovereign and died at Tehran. Since then the chiefs have been deprived of
these possessions, and the present head of the family is serving in Sistan with
100 Jagatai horsemen.
The government of the district is administered by a nominee of the
Governor General of Khurasan; but it may be deemed by position and con
nection an appanage of the Sabzawar government or district.— [Napier.)
JAG HARK— Lat. , Long. ; Elev. 4,650 ' .
A btduk of the Mashhad district of Khurasan, 18 to 20 miles west of
Mashhad. It consists of four or five large villages in the glen of the Nur-
abad range, through which passes the Darud route from Nishapur to Mash
had. The population are chiefly Ajam. They lost half their number in the
famine, and are dependent to a great extent on the sale of fruit.
The village of Jaghark is built on the slope of a high slate hill right
down to the edge of the stream, and is a fine large one, of about 250 inhabited
houses, with extensive orchards, fuel and timber plantations, and terraced
vineyards. The trees felled for timber are chiefly plane and poplar. The
plantations for firewood are thick copses cut down to the stumps after the
wood has attained a girth of five to six inches.
The revenue of the district is cash 1,615 tumans and grain 40 khar-
wars. The estimated population is 3,000. The main stream of the
district is called the Rud-i-J aghark, which runs down into the town of
Mashhad. The entrance into the district on the Mashhad side is called the
Kotal-i-Jaghark* which is alight ascent of 300 feet, consisting chiefly of
magnesian limestone. From its top the last glimpse of the cupola of the
Mashhad shrine (^. v.) is caught; for this reason apparently _ good Mussul
mans had pieces of rags torn from their garments secured in many places
on it as a testimony for the Doomsday of their having paid the required
devotion to the Imam. r lhe natives of Jaghark are nell made and haidy;
the women fair, and the children rosy and beautiful, with daik e^es.
The name Jaghark signifies “ the place of drowning/' from a tradition
that this country was at one time under the sea, and that this was the spot
where Jonah or Tunas was cast into it. He was cast up again fiom the
whale's belly at the spot named Yunasi [q. v.),—[Napier, Beliew, liozario.)
JAHANABAD— Lat. 31° 2' 0", Long. 61° 46' 0" ; Elbiv. ' [St. John).
A frontier fort in Persian Sistan consisting of the usual square mud-walled
enclosure, with unusually high walls, and surrounded by a wet ditch.
There are no houses or cultivation in its vicinity, though it has the appearance
of having once been a flourishing place. There are thirty garrisoning
sarbasis, who appear to guard it zealously, giving admittance to none

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.

The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.

The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
