melons. The northern and the north-western shore of the bay is covered
with sand, and the southern and south-eastern produces a mass of reeds. In
the vicinity of the plains and reeds bordering on the Atrak are found wolves,
foxes, wild pigs, jiran (wdld goats), jackals, &c.
The sea shore opposite the bay of Hasan Kuli is low and sandy; so much
so that at the distance of some 3 or 4 miles from the end of the northern sand-
spit only 6 feet of water is found; but from this point the depth increases
rapidly in proportion to the distance from the shore, so that from a depth
of 6 feet in | mile 12 feet is met with, and thence the depth of the sea in
creases rapidly, and at 6 or 7 miles from the shore the depth reaches 18
feet. The bottom along the w r hole sea shore of the bay is a blue mud.
Vessels bound for Hasan Kuli Bay prefer coming to an anchorage 9 miles to
the north of the entrance to the bay, opposite the Turkman aid Chikishliar,
in a depth of 18 feet and a clay bottom, at about 2| miles from the shore.
The coast at this spot is more accessible, 12 feet of water being found not
more than a mile from the shore, and small craft can approach close to

A settlement of the Ogurjali Turkmans, on the middle or eastern edge of
the northern landspit of Hasan Kuli Bay, and about 3 miles from its extre

HASHTAHTJN— Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A halting-place in Eastern Khurasan, 42 miles east of Khaf, on the road to
Ghurian. It consists of a number of ruined and abandoned Iwez and canals.
Water is obtainable from the karez, and caravans sometimes halt here; but,
as it is much infested by Turkmans, they generally press on and reach the
first inhabited place.— [Stewart.)

A village in the province of Astarabad containing 200 houses. It lies on
the road to the town of Astarabad from Shahrud by Radkan.
Hasht Tikkah is a frontier village between Astarabad and Mazandaran,
and is distant from Ghaz 6 miles, which is equal to double the distance on
fair ground owing to the swampy nature of the road. Supplies are ample

A village in Khurasan, 28 miles from Bfrjand, on the road to Tabbas.—-

A halting place in the Dasht-i-Lut, Khurasan, on the road from Karman to
Birjand via God-i-iNamak. There is only a dry well here and no inhabit

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.

The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.

The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
