GrIARMAU —Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A stream in Northern Khurasan draining northwards from the eastern
extremity of the Kopet-Dagh. The head waters of the Giarmau are occu
pied by Kurd settlements belonging to the Kucban province. The Giar
mau valley is small, and its population the same. The heights are rugged
to the west of it; else the Tekkes would have given the Kurd settlers small
peace. The Firuza flows close to it.— (Peiruisevilch.)
GIFAN, on GIF ANA— Lat. 37° 51' 0," Long. 57° ST'O" ; Elev. 4,431)

A village, stream, and hill in Northern Khurasan. The village is situated in
the valley of the Shirin Chai river. The peak is the first of a series which
run south-east from the northern chain of the Kuchan province.
The stream from it joins the Atrak, having issued from under the rocky
Misinau ridge west of Giarmau. There are no Gifan settlements beyond
its extremity. Below the gorge in the Gifan valley there is no popula
tion for 13 miles; as far as Kattish, where the Gifan and Kush-Khari blend.
Beyond the villages of Nau and Kalajika the Gifan and Khush Khari unit
ing enter the Shirin Dere. The Sumar-Su joins the Gifan in the
M ama valley. There is no population from the extremity of the Misinau
range to Mahmudabad, 28 miles.— [Napier, Petrusevitch.)

A village of 100 houses in the Shahrud district, 14 miles from Bustan,

A village in Khurasan, situated within the stronghold of Kalat-i-Nadiri,
about 2 miles from the southern entrance, called Darband-i-Arghunshah.
It is the residence of the Khan of this district, but is a poor place, consisting
of some one hundred wretched houses of mud built on the edge of the
level ground. An old red sandstone tower, fluted with half columns of the
same stone, and handsomely decorated with carving in blind arches, well
executed, built by Nadir for his descendants, has been repaired by the Khan,

A pass in Northern Khurasan, about 70 miles from Biijnurd, on the western
road to Kara KaFa. It is passable for light guns.— {Napier.)

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.

The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.

The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

W.’ [Mss Eur F112/376, f 49v].

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
