practicable for artillery, leads to it from Kaplan Kaia, through which the
Turkmans were wont to raid.— [Thomson, Napier, Stephen.)

A village in ^Northern Khurasan, about 4 miles from Jah Jarm, on the road

fine tributary of the Atrak joins it near this village. Slnrvanis 21 miles

district of Garma-Khan is described as hot and unhealthy on account of the
rice cultivation.— [Thomson, Napier, MacGregor.)

north-west of Shirvan ; the hills on each side being chalk and coloured
loams, low and easy of access. The stream also flows through a defile called
the Garmi-Khas before reaching the Gurgan. The stream is of importance;
as it is joined very near its source by the Kara Kazan spring, the true source

settlement of the boundary by this river as the Atrak would involve the loss
to Persia of some fertile districts.— [Napier.)

A ruined fort in Khurasan. It occupies a very strong position on the westerly
road from Mashhad to Herat, and about 43 miles south of the former town.
There was formerly a village here, but the Turkmans have gradually carried
nearly all the inhabitants off. The fort is placed high above the left bank
of a stream with steep scarped sides. It could, no doubt, be made almost
impregnable; as it is not commanded, and a short covered way would enable
the garrison to procure water from over the cliff.'— [MacGregor.)
GAUNIS KHUN— Lat. , Long. ; Elev. '.
A village, 11 miles east of Burujfrd, on the Sultanabad road. It is situated
