place about 2 or b miles off. It contains some Hindu shopkeepers, and
has a certain importance as being the junction of roads for Tabbas, Turshiz,

A villao-e in Shahrud, in the frontier line between that province and that
of Mazandaran. It is a village of 100 houses with a ruined fort on a mound
and a lar<m caravanserai A roadside inn providing accommodation for caravans (groups of travellers). . Supplies are.procurable in small quantities.
The water of the stream that irrigates the gardens of the village is
brackish; but about 1 mile beyond, and near the serai, is an excellent stream.

any sudden attack. In the small mountain range, about 4 miles south of
Dih-Mullah, there are said to be mines of gold and copper. This village
pays a revenue of 2,000 tumans (£800) and 51/0 kharwars of grain (about

A villao-e in Khurasan, on the road from Mashhad toMshapur, and 23 miles
from the latter place. It is situated in a fertile valley in a forest of
gardens and fruit trees consisting of almond, walnut, apple, pears, mulber
ries, and others.
This village possesses very little corn land, and suffered in consequence
very severely from the famine of 1871, which is said to have swept off 1,500
inhabitants out of 3,000. It still contains some 500 houses, of which 300

A village in Khurasan, 12 miles from Shurab, on the road from Nishapurto
Sabzawar. The boundary between the Nishapur and Sabzawar districts is

A village in Khurasan, midway between Bajistan and Unasi, on the road to
Turbat-i-Haidari. It is situated in a plain covered with wild rue, poppies,
and camel-grass; and there is a gap in the mountains just above the village,

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.

The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.

The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
