DA.SHT-1-TARKMAN-Lat. , Long. ; Eley.
A plain in North-Eastern Khurasan between Ak-Larband and Sarakhs,
about 7 or 8 miles from the former place. It consists of a series of bare
sandy undulating ridges, with an absolute want of any life whatever. It is
extremely dreaded by Persians, as it is haunted by raiding bands of Turk
mans, always on the look out for caravans, &c., going to or from Sarakhs.—
{MacGregor.)
DASJIRDTJN— La.t. , Long. ; Elev.
A village in Khurasan, about 45 miles north of Tabbas. It is the head
quarters of a petty governor appointed from Tabbas. Supplies in small
quantities can be procured here, and a large quantity of supplies could be
drawn from the villages in the vicinity, as they are rich for this part of
the country and numerous. There are roads from Dasjirdun, widen cross the
desert from Samnan and Damghan. The camels which carry the tobacco
from Tabbas to Tihran go by this road ; but no food for horses is procurable
on it.— [Stewart.)
DASTAGHlCH —Lat. , Long. ; Elev. ' .
A village in the Narjun district of Khurasan, at the foot of the Mutnma-
bad mountains, 8 miles due north of Sarbesha.— (Belleio )
DAST-GARDAN— Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A village in Khurasan, 112 miles from Pusht-i-Baiia n, on the road to

A village in Khurasan, 2 miles south-west of Turshfz, on the right of the
road from Anarbah.— {Taylor)
DAULATABAD— Lat. 36° 23' 0", Long. 59° 58' 0" ; Elev. ' {Walker).
A frontier fort in Khurasan, 10 miles south of Sarakhs. It is large
enough to hold 400 men ; but the ordinary Persian garrison consists of
some & sixteen men onlv. No supplies are procurable ; but there is a well
in the fort about 20 or“30 feet deep, and fuel is to be found on the river bed
about half a mile off. On the right bank of the river are some heights,
which might be rendered a very strong position for a fort, and arrangements
might be made for storing water in the river-bed below. This would prob
ably be a better tactical position for a frontier fort than that of Sarakhs.
{MacGregor.)
DAULATABAD—Lit. , Long. ; Elet. ' •
A village in KMrasan, 17 miles from TdrMt-r-Shaik-i-Jam, on the road

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.
The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan.
