A sprino 1 of brackish water, 36 miles north-east of Ahvvaz, on the road to
Sabzawav (Afghanistan).— (S/ewart.)
CHAT-I-ATRAK*— Lat. 37° 53' O' 7 , Long. 55° 20' 0" ; Elev.
(Napier).
A Russian station on the Atrak river at the point of its junction with the
river Sumbar. There is a ford here and an entrenchment. The breadth of
the river here is about 35 feet when at flood, and is only then fordable at one
point about a quarter of a mile below Chat. The water of the Atrak is
brackish, but not so much so as that of the Sumbar. The Russian troops
stationed here in 1880 had orders to procure water for cooking and drink
ing purposes from the Atrak above its junction with the Sumbar. The only
fuel obtainable is the bush known as salcsal, which grows in considerable quan
tities alonq the water margin and in the ravine into which both rivers
run; but this was all consumed by the Russian troops, who were obliged
afterwards to use naptha refuse (astatki) for cookino' purposes —

CHILIAN Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A village in Northern Khurasan on the borders of the Daraghaz district to
which it belongs. The village, which is contained in a fort, is wretched
enough ; but it is charmingly situated, amidst groves of trees. Pheasants,
simiku in plumage to the English variety, but with a white patch on each
wing, abound in the vicinity.— (Stewart.)

A \axgQ village in Persian Sistan, 6 miles from Sekoha, on the road to
Nasuabad. . It contains some o50 houses, with a square fort and one round
towei tapeiing to the top in the middle, which forms a capital landmark.
It is situated on the banks of the principal canal, which draws off the waters
of the river Helmand for irrigating purposes, and which is at this point
some 30 feet wide and 6 feet deep, with a current of about one mile an hour,
supplying the whole of the surrounding district with water. It terminates
at Kuh-i-Khajah into a small lake.— fflozario , Goldsmid , Euan - Smilh .)

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.

The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.

The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
