The district Bia-jumand is a buluk of Shahrud-i-Bustan. It consists of
a very extensive tract of low rugged hills, ravine-cut plain, and arid and
salt desert, occupying the whole southern portion of the district. The
principal villages are Biar and Jumand (sofnetimes considered one village
being close together) of 200 houses each, 48 miles south-east from Slih-
rud, Khana Kuh-Deh (200), all on the road from Shahrud to Turshiz"
There are in all nine villages. The inhabitants are of mixed Arab and Aiani
race. Tarud-i-Buluk is a subdivision of Biarjumand, lying to the east of it

A village in Khurasan, 48 miles south-east of Shahrud, on the direct road
from Tehran to Herat, situated in a dry, barren, desolate plain. The soil
around for the greater part is fine gravel mixed with sand, but little granite
and less quartz meets there. Marble is seen in large masses. There is also
a great deal of dark-coloured rock in which copper is found, but in small
quantities, and the mines which are said to exist are not worked.— {Clerk.)

A village in Khurasan, 4| miles from Shahrud, on the road to Mashhad.
It is a large walled village of 150 houses inhabited by Arabs, who settled in
the country, it is said, during the khalifat of Bani Abbas. They have lost
their language and distinctive type. The village and the neighbouring
hamlet of Saidabad are watered by a fine “ kanat,” with a strearn flowina*
through an avenue of singel trees. It is sufficient to supply a large force’.

A range of low hills north of Kam and dividing it from Nim buluk They
consist of mounds of trap, dark marl rock, old red sandstone, and o. re yclay,
among the whole of which talc, quartand a gate are lying about loose.
The pass Godar-i-Gul is 800 feet above Kam. These hills are a continuation

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.
The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.
The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.
Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.
