BANDAR, GEZ— Lat. } Dong. • Dlev. '
A villas'c, 32 miles from Ast.arabad. It is the principal port on the south
east coast of the Caspian. It consists of eight or nine houses built out of
packing cases, and a very dangerous and wretchedly constructed pier, which
runs out into water deep enough for a ship’s boat to come alongside. There
is a caravanserai A roadside inn providing accommodation for caravans (groups of travellers). . Gez is in the Anazan buluk.— [Napier, MacGregor.)

A village of Sistan, inhabited by people of the Sanjurani tribe, formerly
the property of Imam Khan (deceased), who made it over to Sharif Khan.—

BAND-I-DUK FI TAR*—Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A dam in Kalat-i-Nadiri, Khurasan, which stretches across the Kalat
river near the village of Nafta.— [MacGregor.)
BAND-I-FARlDTJN—L at. , Long. ; Elev.
A dam in Khurasan, 3 miles from the village of Earfdun [q.v.),
and 38 miles south of Mashhad. Here a beautiful stream comes meandering
among swampy and reedy meadows down to a pass between rocks 1,000
feet high. Nature had provided a leap for the water of some 50 feet, and
here a former king built a stone embankment across. It is built of solid
masonry of stone and burnt brick, united by cement, which has become
like iron, and is 100 paces long and 10 broad. Against this causeway the
stream rose to a certain height, and then found a passage down several
tunnels of masonry, and so flowed out at the bottom of the embankment to
fertilize the fields in the direction of Faridun and other villages. This
important work became dilapidated in the course of ages, but it was repair
ed by the Prince Governor A Prince of the Royal line who also acted as Governor of a large Iranian province during the Qājār period (1794-1925). of Khurasan'’s orders.— [Easiwick.)

A dam across the Rud-i-Jaghark, 12 miles from Mashhad. It is situated
in a defile, and is so constructed as to permit the flow of water through a
folding gate at pleasure. In fact, it is a lock.— [Rozario.)

A tribe of Khurasan inhabiting the neighbourhood of Tabbas and Tun.

BANJAR— Lat. 31° 2'0”, Long. 6I°3MQ"; Elev. 1,580 / [Walker).
A flourishing village of some 400 houses (Rozario says 1,000 houses) in Persian
Sistan, situated about 8 miles east of Nasirabad, and surrounded by a
great extent of cultivation, which is watered by numerous irrigation canals.
It originally belonged to the Kayani tribe, but since about 1820 has been in
the possession of the Sarbandi ; it only contains four or five families of

BANJARE— Lat. 31° 2' 0", Long. 61° 34' 0"; Elev. 1,580' ( Walker).
A flourishing village of some 400 houses in Persian Sistan, situated about
8 miles east of Nasirabad, and surrounded by a great extent of cultivation.

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.

The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.

The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

W.’ [Mss Eur F112/376, f 49v].

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
