A place in Afghanistan whence the Aleili Turkmans originally came before
they settled at Bavard.— [Stewart.')

A village of Astarabad-Bustan, 4? miles from Astarabad, on the road to Ban

A village of considerable size in Central Khurasan, 48 miles north-east of

ARAB-O-AJAM.
The inhabitants of the Shahrul-Bustan district are designated Arab-o-
Ajam (Arabs and Persians), though there is a small proportion of Turks.
The first are the descendants of the Arab conquerors ; but the three races
have now fused so completely, that they are undistinguishable in feature and
language. One of the finest regiments in the Persian Army is called
Arab-o-Ajam, and is celebrated for its valour.— [MacGregor.)

A stage in Khurasan, 73 miles from Tabbas, on the road to Bfrjand.— ( Mac

ARCHING AN— Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A village in North-Eastern Khurasan, lying on the Archingan stream,
north of the Goyik Kotal (337°) and of Kalat-i-Nadfri. It has 60 houses,
water, and supplies, and is situated 11 miles from Kalat-i-Nadiri and 25
from Barwad. The settlement was reoccupied in 1873.— [Napier

ARCHINGAN— Lat, 37 8 18' 20", Long. 59° 45' 10"; Elev.
[Napier).
A village in the Atak to the north-west of the district of Kalat-i-Nadiri.
It contains only some one hundred houses, which were re-peopled in about
1873. It is watered by a stream, the Ab-i-Archingan, which flows from
the Kuh-i-Imarah or Hazar Masjid, and passes through Kalat.— [Napier,

ARDAGHICH— Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A village in the Ardaghich subdivision of the Nishapur district of Northern
Khurasan, 8 miles from Dihrud, on the road to Nishapur. There is a sprint

ARDAMAH— Lat. , Long. ; Elev.
A subdivision of Mashhad, in Khurasan, comprising a number of glens in
the mountains, 15 to 20 miles south-west of Mashhad,and comprising about
twelve villages. There is little irrigated eornland, but a good supply of
water in the glens. Population 1,000 families of Turband Ajan descent, or
5,000 souls, paying a revenue in cash of 3,526 tumans, and of 106 khar-
wars in grain.

One of several flourishing villages dotting the plain south of the town of

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.

The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.

The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.

Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.

W.’ [Mss Eur F112/376, f 49v].

It also includes the following inserted papers (folios 51 to 60): a memorandum from the Office of the Quartermaster General in India, Intelligence Branch to Lord Curzon, dated 6 December 1895, forwarding for his information ‘Corrections to Volume I of the Gazetteer of Persia’, consisting of articles on the Nishapur district of the province of Khorasan, and the Shelag river.
