Shaikh Hamad and his son and brother.
E. The Shaikhs admit that there is an advantage to
themselves in the appointment of a Persian Consul in
Bahrain as Persian recognition of the independence of the
islands would be implied. On the other hand they consider
that the disadvantages far outweigh this one gain.
3. There is a numerous Persian colony in the island
and some of its members are men of wealth and influence.
Indeed the trade c£ Bahrain, apart irom the pearl trade,
is largely in the hands of Indians and Persians. Persians
also provide tne bulk of the labour at the Customs jetty an
in the markets.
Some of the richer Persians are Sunnis from the
Bastak district, but the majority are Sh|^i)h. The Shaikhs
argue that the Persian Consul would certainly be a Shiah,
who, in the nature of things would use his official
position and the prestige that it would give him to
organise hie co -religionists and compatriots in opposition
