GENEVA, Aug. 26
Mirza Mohamed All Khan Feroughi,
Persian Minister of Foreign Affairs, has
sent to the League of Nations, for circula
tion to all the States members, a copy of
a translation of a letter which he says
he has addressed to the British Legation
in Teheran protesting’ against what he
describes as a further infringement of
the sovereign right of Persia over
Bahrein. The letter reads as follows
Sir,—According to a statement which has
appeared in several newspapers ... a British
syndicate has obtained irom the Sheikh of
Bahrein a concession for exploiting the oil in
the islands, and Major Holmes, the repre
sentative of the syndicate, has already begun
work.
In view of the fact that the Bahrein Islands
form an integral part of Persia, and that
Persia has incontestable rights of sovereignty
over these islands—as proved to your Govern
ment and to the League of Nations in our
letters of November 26, 1927, and August 2,
1928, referring to the express recognition by
your Government in 1879 of Persia’s rights of
sovereignty over the islands—my Govern
ment protests energetically against the con
cession in question and against any other
concession not granted directly by the Persian
Government in the Bahrein Islands and
declares such concessions null and void.
I regret that, in spite of the spirit of equity
which I readily acknowledge in your Govern
ment, it should from time to time become
necessary to renew our protest on this matter. |
Such acts—and. the failure to recognize
Persia’s incontestable rights over the Bahrein
Islands—cannot, of course, in any way affect
those rights ; and my S Government considers
itself at liberty to claim and demand the
restitution of any profit that may accrue from
the concession in question without prejudice
to the damages relating thereto.—(Signed)
