was ruled by a MUBsalmaa Governor appointed by the Portuguese
during their oooupation* it ha'ppened that the Governor was a
Sunni i^SBUlman and his Vazir was still More of a sealot in
the Sunni religion. in order to get the people of the
islands converted to hie religion, he produced one day a
pomegranate on the skin of which the names of God, the prophet
and three first Khalifs of Islam appeared in relief by the
natural overgrowth of the pomegranate grains underneath and
maintained that this natural phenomenon was a proof of the
righteousness of the Sunni religion (as the Sunnis only recognise
the first three Khalifs of Islam and the Shiahs refute their
authority and regard them as impostors, translator). A hermit
called lluhamad ban Issa found out the sleight of hand of the
Va$ir and proved to the Governor that the pomegranate when
young had been placed in m earthen mould on the inside of
vhich those names had been engraved and the natural growth
of the fruit was the cause of the apparent phenomenon,
fhe people of the islands were thereupon delivered from the
exactions of the Vassir.
