a general surveillance over events in Bahrein,
Haji Aho.ul Muhamma.cL t the Malek-ut—fuj Jar of Bus hire,
who was well informed on Gulf history, finished on the 16th
Rajah 1268, under orders from Hasr-ed-Bin ghah, a pamphlet
placing on record existing conditions in Bahrein and the
evidence in support of Persian sovereignty over Bahrein.
I (Saeed Baficy) have a±n seen some five years ago a copy
of this pamphlet and I made some notes and excerpts, which
I quote here in the words of the writer The lowest of the four classes into which East India Company civil servants were divided. A Writer’s duties originally consisted mostly of copying documents and book-keeping. :
”When the Eejaz was under the occupation of Muhammad
pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. , the Wali of Egypt, the latter sent a hig army and
occupied Riyadh, el Hasa and Qatif and intended to subjugate
Bahrein which was then in possession of sheifch Ahdullah hen
Ahmad Athoohi. A message was again sent to Ahbas pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. ,
the Officer commanding the Egyptian troops, purporting to
say that the islands belonged to Persia and that it was
impossible that they could be handed over to the Egyptian
rule. After much discussion it was arranged that the
matter should be left to the arbitration of the British
Resident in Bushire who was then one Bdln Sahib (?Mr.Blane).
Each of the two parties wrote out his claim and sent the
statement with a representative to the British Resident, who
wrote to both stating that the islands belonged to Persia and
this award prevented Abbas pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. from fighting and occupying
Bahrein., He gave up his intention of occupying the
islands and demanded compensation for his expenses and
received 4000 French Rials ecfuivalent to Romans 1800, after
which he returned. A fight took place between Sheikh
Abdullah ben Ahmad and his cousins, i^xammad and Ali, the
sons of Khalifeh, in 1258 after the former had been governing
the islands fox* many years, and Sheikh Abdullah defeated his
cousins, whom he expelled from Bahrein, ihey went to the
