were
obtained, from twenty-three and twenty-four fathoms. When fairly
entered, it seemed like a perfect lake, being entirely surrounded by land,
with no visible ingress or egress. At sunset, anchored in twenty-three
fathoms blue clay, off the town of Copang, about half a mile from the
jetty. . This place has been so frequently described that it is unnecessary
my doing so: wood, water, and provisions, arc very plentiful, and can be at
all times procured with great ease and on most moderate terms. The
town, and a portion of the surrounding country, belongs to the Dutch, and
is governed by a Resident, whom we found particularly civil and polite
affording us every assistance possible. J 1 '
On tne 27th of August, having completed our supplies, weighed anchor
and stood out of Copang Bay. Parted company with the schooner Isabella,
w nen vessel proceeded on her voyage to Sydney, whilst we shaped our
course for Java, On the 30th, saw some very high rugged land bearing
east north-east: at noon our latitude was 8° 57 7 south, and longitude 11(P
11 cast, extremes of Lombock east by north to north-west. Passed over
a very strong ripple caused by the meeting of two counter currents, the
^ea around us being so agitated that it seemed as if the vessel was in the
very, midst. of breakers: we sounded however, and no bottom could be
o tamed with 100 fathoms of line. The eddy was so great for a short
penoc that all steerage way was lost,—the Tigris being actually forced
lourn: on hoi heel even against her helm, although a steady six knot
leeze was blowing at the time : wo soon got over it, and then found that
iho. tide set in with great rapidity through the Straits of Lombock,
vv ic i we safely cleared before the sun had set. As the haze dispersed, the
s upendous and majestic Peak of Bally was perceptible, towering far
a ove die clouds to tne height of 15,000 feet; and so close did it appear,
nougli three leagues distant, that the summit literally seemed to be
i owning upon us in awful sublimity, its elevation being so greafc that it
»vas a considerable time before we could bring ourselves to believe that
i was land, never having before seen any mountain so lofty. At 5T5,
extremes oi Lomboex Island bearing north-east by cast -§ east to south
-)y east, sounding the north end of Bally; distance off shore about six miles.
At noon on the following day, Bally Peak was still visible, though
nearly thirty leagues distant from us. At 10‘45 a. m. of the 5th Sept,
anchored in Batavia Roads, having experienced from the Island of Timor
moderate south-east breezes with fine clear weather. Found riding here
fifty-seven sail of large Dutch Indiamen and a brig of war. On tbe 12th,
having filled up our water and completed our stores, quitted Batavia and
proceeded on our voyage to Bombay, which place we reached on the 7th
of November, after enduring for several days great privation for water and
provisions, which we bad run short of in consequence of our making a
very long, and tedious passage, having for many weeks experienced light
eaiiiing airs with frequent calms.
