Ship Buckinghamshire in a hurricane off Goa, 1847.
Remarks—Monday, 19th April, 1847.
The gale blowing furiously and veering to the Eastward; cut the fore-sail
from the yard and hauled it on deck. The fore top sail blew entirely
away. At 0° 30' r. m., the ship inclined to broach to, cut away the nuzen
mast and kept her before it. Blowing a hurricane, blew away the maw
top mast, the hurricane increasing and the fore mast bending to ^
force. About 1 p. m. the foremast fell over starboard: a most furious gust
'lew away the main mast near the deck. The quarter boats blew away.
