on the subject. The Secretary was also instructed to enquire after observers for
the other stations at which observatories might be established, and to report pro
gress to the Society.
The Secretary stated that he was now busily engaged, in accordance with the
instructions of the Society, in preparing the first series of their papers for press—
the Aden observations for 1848,—the concluding portion of which had not as yet
been received, though an enormous mass of papers from Mr. Mayes, referring to
previous years, of which much use might be made, were now in their hands;
that, in conformity with the principle laid down in 1844, when the subject was
first mooted, and which had ever since been acted on, the great object of the scheme
was less to determine the Tidal and Meteorological phenomena at one particular
part than to trace the connection of the appearance of these at places distant from
each other-, One of the great facts started with was to see and discover “how far
the instruments were affected beyond the limits of perceptible perturbation, and
at what rate and in what direction these perturbations apparently travelled/’
the Colaba Observatory being fixed on as the only settled and well-arranged es
tablishment as the point of reference. It now became requisite to obtain access to
the records of the Observatory before Mr. Mayes’ papers could be turned to the
account piofessediy intended—that of exhibiting the connection of serial and ocea
nic phenomena at the mouth of the Red Sea with those on the shores of India.
Captain Montnou having stated that it was impossible to permit the records of
the Observatory to be withdrawn from it, a letter—of which a draft was laid be
fore the Society and approved of—was directed to be written, asking permission to
copy the monthly observations of the Observatory, such as were abont to be
prepared for the printer’s hands. The object in asking permission to inspect the
records, in place of making copies, was merely to save expence, time, and trouble :
as it seemed to be thought that this was out of the question, the plan most accepta
ble to Captain Montnou was ordered to be resorted to.
