to our lowest terrace in Fife, one about ten or twelve feet above the present level
of the sea, and must therefore know something of this class of objects. Let me
mention, however, that the terrace most apt everywhere to be found in a distinct
form and character is one at 64 to 70 feet. Strathtysum House is situated upon it
here, and it extends a good way in both directions from that place, appearing a*ain
at Pitmilly. The other terraces in Scotland are at 107, 126, 165, 192, 208 or 210
243, 280, 386-92, &c. For example, Pipeland Farm-house is on the 165. The
208 is found at Cairnsmill. Huge fragments of an alluvial plateau at 107 laid
down by the Zay at a former level, are scattered over Leuchars parish; Straiton
house upon one. There is a less frequently marked beach of 56 feet, at Errol, at
Braigie near Dundee, &c. There is one of similar character in some few
places at 144 feet. Their being pretty numerous and therefore at small intervals
fiom each other, makes a difficulty in ascertaining that we see in different places
memorials of exactly the same rests of the sea. Yet no one that has given the
study to the subject which I have done, could fail to conclude that such was the
case. What I think most likely to be found in new scenes of the investigation is
the 64-70 feet beach, as it is so palpable in various parts of America. I would
therefore have you to look particularly for it, keeping the Strathtysum plateau in
mind as a model for the whole.
I fully trust to your well-known love of science that this address will not
be irksome to you, whether you may be able to comply with my wishes or not
Any facts sent ere a very long time elapses would probably be serviceable for a
work I shall by and bye put to press upon the subject.
Believe me, my dear Sir, sincerely yours, (Signed) Robert Chambers.
