About this record
- Content
The journal of Lieutenant Wellsted's survey of the Red Sea in connection with the establishment of steam communication between Europe and India. This mission was authorised in 1829 by the Bombay Government in accordance with orders from the Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. . Up to that point charts of the Red Sea had been based on information obtained by Sir Home Popham during an expedition in 1800 (included identifying location of Jeddah, Mocha and Suez) and from that supplied by Captain Court under the direction of Lord Valencia. Correspondence discusses how the number of wrecks to be found indicated the importance of charting the reefs.
The survey was conducted using the Benarus and the Palinurus. The Benarus completed the survey of the coast to the south of Jeddah, and the Palinurus examined the northern portion of the sea, starting at Suez on 12 January 1829. The memoir contains a description of the coast and its inhabitants.
Correspondents include the Superintendent of the Indian Navy (Sir Charles Malcolm) and the Governor of Bombay (John FitzGibbon, Earl of Clare).
