Please see my telegram X^567 July 25th with regard
to reserve of 50 pound material g In this telegram I said
5j miles would be used on the Euphrates line 0 The remainder
is being used at Bagadad east for siding to new hospital at
Kurradah and the other sidings to meet traffic development*
As regards personnel my increased requirements for
next few months are covered by demand already sent you this
month by 3rd Echelon 0 A new War Establishment for railways
is under preparation and will be sent you as soon as possible
but in meantime I await a reply to my A,8493 September 6th as
if shortage is very large policy may be affected 0
As regards rolling stock present provision was
made before the Euphrates line was sanctioned and was based on 14
trains on Basrah Amarah and Kut El Amarah Baghdad sections and 4
trains daily on Baghdad Khanikin section c No extension
to Khanikin was contemplated in Freeland 5 s report,, The adoption
of the Euphrates line put the matter on a new basis and the stock
now on order will suffice for 2000 tons a day from Basrah to
Baghdad plus necessary service beyond Baghdad which we estimate
at 5 trains a day from Baghdad to Khanikin plus 1 ambulance trauic
All this was explained in my X.S728 June 22nd lasto It was nee
thought desirable to reduce these figures and I thereforo asked
for a small Increase of 10 locomotives and 100 wagons to provide
to
for the extension from Khanikip/Pal Tak, If however it is
necessary provision of this increase can be deferred until the
Euphrates line is in operation by slight reduction of traf'ia or;
existing lines. A luller explanation of rolling stock position
will be sent you by post, Het^e gauge stock will be interchange,bl.
