In and beyond Kerkouk maintenance of troops is a
great strain on motor transport now will be &orse in
rain season and earlier (l group undec.) than possible
completion'Ofmetre gauge will be welcome. When Suleiman
lyeh trouble broke out we considered light line from
Fathah to Kerkouk and found it impossible to get
craft to feryy heavy stores across gorge before
riso of river in January. Am of opinion that this and
possible late date of arrival of 60 centimetre makes
the laying of this line to Kerkouk from Kifri where
metre gauge can arrive by September 16th the best
solution. When floods make out temporary bridge unsafe
we can institute ferry on Dialha. Kifri Kerkouk
is shorter than Fathah Kerkouk and v/ill obviate a
Baiji Fathah extension while grades out of the Fathah
gorge are difficult to negotiate. Estimate Kifri Kerkouk
metre gauge can be laid in 5 months from nutscial being
available on the sp«t at Kut el Amarah. 60 centimetre
extension from Sherd to Gaiyarah will suffice. Strongly
advocate this as during last few days trouble has broken
out north of Mosul and I have troops operating there and
increased garrison, estimates for 60 centimetre Kerkouk
and Qaiyaroh fellows. No doubt you are ay/are coal at Kifri
has some value and under temporary military installation we
are already working oil at Qaiyarah.
