r 2he pile bridge© over the Atahan, ^ebel and Hillah
br^nchee of the Euphrates will have to b« replaced by
m&aonry bridges in the course of thr next 4 or 5 years*
It la not proposed to attempt this at present*
A large number of minor bridges and irrigation
oulverts throughout the whole system, which consist at
present of timber or corrugated iron pipes must be replaced
gradually by masonry structures.
(11) A bridge over the *igria at Baghdad will eventually
be ft necessity far the efficiency and economical working of the
whole system. It will replace the wagon ferry mentioned in
( 4 ) abovg. It would probably be aited just above Baghdad
and should carry a road and footway as well as the track.
Its cost is not likely to be much under UOO.OOO. but its
oonstriiotlon presents no great engineering difficulty and with
adequate preparation it could be built in two low water seasons
(July - lovember).
It is rroroaed to get out preliminary plans this year
so that order® for the necessary plant and girders can be
placed when the construction of the bridge is decided on.

hoeo jheds of steel and corrugated Iron were ordered
early In 1^18 from India and acre neurly all in the country.
Sufficient sheds are available to meet the needs of the near
futurej with the exception of Aakina none have yet been erected.
Pumping plant in the country or on order will meet the needs of
the system for some time,
kittle or nothing has been done in the way of Signals,
but orders are now being placed for installations of the
simplest kind.
Bo interlocking will be attempted at present.
