The Ameer replied that Yslum’s mission had for its object nothino* more
than the suppression of Yacoob’s rebellion, and that there was no intention of
meddling with his administration.
710. Immediately after this the Ameer received a letter from Uslum and
ieramoz, in which he detected the result of Noor Mahomed’s intrigues. They
»viote pioposing that Girishk should he separated from the governorship of
Candahar, that Uslum should be made Governor of it, and Noor Mahomed,
tlie collector of the revenue. The Ameer told Uslum to pack off Noor Maho
med at once to Cabul, and sent Mirza Abdool Ali to take his place at Candahar,
working under subordination to Uslum.
711.. On the 14th of November the agent wrote, from information which
one of his own messengers brought him, that during the siege of Candahar
both Noor Mahomed and Sufdur Ali had had dealings with Yacoob, and that
none were free from suspicion of such secret dealings with him, except Shere
Ali, the Governor, and Uutteh Ali, the commandant of the cavalry.
712, When the news of Noor Mahomed’s re-call arrived, Uslum
sent him off at once, and when he arrived in Cabul the Ameer taxed him with
want of zeal in opposing Yacoob. Nor did the Ameer exempt Sufdur Ali from
very decided blame on a similar account.—[ Diary ending IQth December. ] The
account sent by Noor Mahomed’s successor, Abdool Ali, of the state of the

“ It was to the effect that Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Shere Ali Khan, Governor of Candahar, had for the most
part realized the revenues of the country without the knowledge of officials appointed to this
duty, and that, owing to the absence of cultivation in the lands formerly and recently resumed,
there would be a deficiency of ten lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees of rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. in the revenue of the Province. He also asked
instructions regarding the seventy-five thousand rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. which from of old had been granted to
the Barukzai clan as remission of revenue, and also what was to be done in respect of the
revenues already realized and cairied off by Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Mahomed Yacoob Khan. On this the
Ameer ordered that whatever revenues Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Shere Ali Khan has realized without the know

are necessary. In this juncture Syud Noor Mahomed Shah made some remark remonstrating
against the second collection of revenue which had been once already made by Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Mahomed
Yacoob Khan. The Ameer became highly displeased, and said—
“ f Oh, Syud Noor Mahomed Shah ! I made you my Prime Minister, and this is the ingra
titude you dared to show me; for, whatever mischief has been done by Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Mahomed Yacoob
Khan has been done with your knowledge, and, it is reported, by your connivance also. Were
it not for your Syudshiy, you are deserving of being brought pnder the saw (or being sawn in
