Again, on the samp day, he wrote that Ursulla Khan, Ghilzai, had been
occupied in the entertainment of recruits of 14 and 15 years of for infantry
regiments in Lohgurd and other places. About two regiments hnrl aWnrlv
been entertained, and were being trained in Cabul.
This addition to the army had been necessitated by Yacoob’s rebellion in
which, however, there was by this time apparently little vitality left. Now,
however, came the news of his successes at Ghoreean, and his advance on
Herat. There was consequently renewed recruiting, standards being for that

and then he issued orders for the entertainment of irregulars (Jezailchees) in
corporating in the regular regiments all the Jezailchees employed at the time.

Meeting and the close of 1869.
420. Mission of the Persian Envoy Abool Mussun to Cabul. —On the 22nd
July 1869 there came a letter from Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Abdoollah Khan, Deputy Governor
of Herat, informing the Ameer that Syud Ahool Hussun Shah had been ap
pointed as envoy to Cabul by the Persian Government, and asking for instruc
tions as to his treatment. The Ameer told him to entertain the envoy hospita
bly and send him on to Cabul.
The Persian Governor of Meshed, in announcing his mission to Ibrahim,

was to congratulate the Ameer on his suc
cesses and to convey friendly assurances. But in his letter dated the 13th July,
Mr. Thomson, the Charge d’Affaires at Teheran, told the Viceroy that the Shah’s
real object was to learn wbat had passed between Shere Ali Khan and the Vice
roy at TJmballa, and what engagement he might have contracted with the
British Government on that occasion, and also to ascertain what the Ameer’s
views were with respect to Persia, and specially with regard to Seistan.

«I repret to say that you have never favored us with any letters. His Majesty the King
of Persia has always been your well-wisher, and all who are acquainted with His Majesty’s
policy and feelings do not retard their communications with him. With a view to renew his
friendship, he has been pleased to depute Syud Abool Hussun Shah as envoy to Cabul. I
hope you will receive him kindly, and break your silence in future.”
The Ameer gave him an allowance of Es. 25 a day for a period of 20 days,
after which he was to return to Persia,
Diary ending 9th September 1869. ^ on ^ ^ ^ presented the
following additional letter to Yacoob from the Prince Governor A Prince of the Royal line who also acted as Governor of a large Iranian province during the Qājār period (1794-1925). of Meshed :
“Since you had an interview with His Majesty the King of Persia in Meshed, he has
been your well-wisher, and desires your prosperity. Consequently, at the time of appointing
me as Governor of Meshed, he directed me to write to you to ascertain and submit to him
your wishes, whatever they might be, in order that you might receive his co-operation in
