Herat as its price. Prom what he heard on the road he had however abandoned
this idea before he reached Meshed.

the Meshed Agent wrote on the 16th August) and with 30 sowars went over the
Kheyer Pass into Khiva. On the 22nd November the report of Azim Khan’s
death was confirmed by a letter from the Governor of Sehzwar. A Fatiha
was read by the Ameer’s order in the name of his deceased half-brother.
Regarding these refugees, the following correspondence passed between the
Government of India and Her Majesty’s Legation at Teheran:
Mr. Thomson having reported the arrival at Meshed of Azim Khan and
Abdool Rahman, on the 12th July 1869 the Government of India wrote to
him, saying,—
“ The Viceroy has every wish that Azim Khan and Ahdool Rahman should be treated by
the Shah or his officers with courtesy and kindness, and he is glad to think that hospitality has
been shown to them as distinguished refugees. But it is his earnest desire that their conduct
should be carefully and closely watched, and that, if possible, steps may be taken to prevent
them from engaging in intrigues which are intended to stir up civil strife and commotion
within the borders of Afghanistan.
“ Such intrigue would seriously interfere with the realization of the earnest desire of
Government for the establishment of a strong power in Afghanistan, which would, on the other
hand, be much helped on if Her Majesty's representative at Teheran could see his way to in
culcate a spirit of friendship towards Shere Ali on the part of the Shah."
Air. Thomson, 30th August, raJ replied that he believed the Persian Minis*
ter would not permit Azim or Abdool Rahman to carry on, during their stay
in Persian territory, any intrigue that could endanger the domestic tranquillity
of Afghanistan.
