no reply has been sent to Syud Bur-
gash’s khureeta An important letter usually sent in an elaborate textile pouch, dispatched as part of the royal or diplomatic correspondence of rulers and elites. addressed to His Ex
cellency the Governor of Bombay.
Invites attention to our No. 361P
dated 17th February 1871, and re
quests that the information therein
called for, relative to affairs of Zanzi-
bar after Syud Majid’s death, may he
furnished at an early date.
Forwards copy of papers connected
with Zanzibar affairs, and submits the
views of the Bombay Government
with regard to the appointment of
Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. at Zanzibar.
In reply to Government of India’s
letter No. 1529 P. of 1871, on Zanzi
bar affairs.
In reply to the last two letters,
states, with reference to the latter,
that a reply to the khureeta An important letter usually sent in an elaborate textile pouch, dispatched as part of the royal or diplomatic correspondence of rulers and elites. from
Syud Burgash was deferred till the
receipt of further information asked
for regarding the recent aspect of
affairs in Zanzibar. Concurs in the
remarks made in paragraph 3 of the
above letter; and, with regard to the
former, states, for His Excellency the
Governor’s information, that the
Secretary of State has desired that no
change shall be made in the existing
arrangements till the result of the
Parliamentary enquiry held during
the late Session is made known.
Among the arrangements to be main
tained in the interim seems desirable
that Dr. Kirk should be suffered to
continue to act for Mr. Churchill,
absent on leave.

ther letter with accompaniment, from

The papers cover: the accession of Syud Burgash [Saiyid Barghash] as Sultan of Zanzibar; the despatch of HMS Wolverine to Zanzibar, and the question of whether the Wolverine should salute the new ruler; requests from the Government of India for information on Zanzibar affairs; the response to Syud Burgash's letter announcing his accession; the new ruler's attitude to the suppression of the slave trade; and correspondence concerning the formal recognition of Syud Burgash as Sultan of Zanzibar.

The Despatch includes correspondence from Dr John Kirk, Acting Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. and HM Consul at Zanzibar.
