Government of India Foreign Department letters (marked 'Secret' or 'Political'), sent to the Secretary of State for India, with Enclosures.

The letters are dated 10 October - 27 December 1871.

The papers relate to Zanzibar, Afghanistan, India, Persia, Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. , Aden, Muscat, the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , Bahrain, and Nejd [Najd].

Arrangement

The Letters and Enclosures are filed in chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume. The volume includes an index on folios 4-68. Entries in the index refer to entries in the volume, in accordance with the pagination system on folios 69-665. Many of the items consist of the Despatch (No. 1), an Abstract of Contents (No. 2), and the Enclosures to the Despatch, (Nos. 3, 4, etc.), each numbered in accordance with the number given in the Abstract of Contents. The Enclosures to each Despatch are in approximate chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume.
