GENERAL NITON TO SECRETARY OP STATE FOR INDIA,
2nd June 1915.
Capture of Turkish river steamer Mosul in good
condition early this morning reported by General Townshend.
We now seem to have accounted for all steamers in possession
of Turks in this part. On night 1st-2nd June some 12
Mahelas which were overtaken escaped into side creeks.
A great deal of firing was heard apparently due to
attack by Marsh Arabs on these boats. Captures include
250 more regulars inclusive of 15 officers, and quantity
of ammunition and rifles. Troops opposing us in front
Kurna estimated 4,000 strong consisting of 10 field guns
of which 7 are captured and 5 regular battalions. Above
estimate based on generally concurrent statements of
prisoners. Have also captured lighter with German mines.
Four Germans are reported to have fled in motor launch
and have probably fallen into hands of unfriendly Arabs
as owing to break down of launch they fled into the
Marshes. Passage above Devil 1 s Elbow impracticable for
naval sloops and General Townshend and Captain Nunn, R.N.
