Sir,

mth reference to your letter No. P.2154 of June 21st,
relative to the demand of the Persian Government for the
withdrawal of the British garrison from the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran.
ports, I am directed by the Marquess Gurzon of Kedleston to
transmit to you, herewith, to be laid before Viscount Peel,
a copy of a note from the Persian Minister, in which he
reiterates his demand for the withdrawal of British troops.
2. It would appear that the force which, according to
7
. the Persian Minister, has recently arrived at Bushire is
merely in relief of the troops which were formerly stationed
there, but the Secretary of State will be glad if Lord Peel
will provide him with further information on this point.
3. The Secretary of State is of opinion that the
intention of the Persian Government to send one hundred and
sixty men to Bushire, as reported in Sir Percy Loraine f s
telegram No. 331 of September 2nd, a copy of which was sent
to you in my letter No. E 8760/6/34 of the 7th instant, does
not materially alter the position described by His Majesty^
Consul-General at Bushire in his telegram No. 198 of April
30th to the Secretary of State for India, since so small a
body of men cannot be expected adequately to fulfil the duties
at present carried out by five hundred men of the Indian army.
Vihile, therefore, Lord Gurzon sees no reason to modify his
views on the subject, he will be glad, before replying to the
Persian Minister, to receive the observations of Lord Peel.
