they are of the Sunni sect, and as such are hated by all Turk Shias. During
the last Russo -1 urkish War the Jelali Kurds of Timur Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. Khan took
some part in the operations round Bayazid, some 2,000 horsemen holding
the frontier in the interests ot Russia and preventing the Aras valley be-
tween Erivan and Nakjivan being overrun by Turkish Kurds. The aiming
<>1 the Jelahs dates fiom this period, for after the retreat of the Turkish
forces, large numbers of Martinis and a quantity of ammunition fell into the
hands ot the Kurds. Now every Jelali on the frontier carries either a
Martini or a Berdanker.

Tins is the name given to a small clan of Kurds of 30 or 40 tents who
dwell m winter at Sara Su, about U fa.sakhs from the village of Arab on
the Aras. they form a separate family to the Jelalis or Milan Kurds. In
the summer they migrate to Baba Gavri, in the Kara Aina (Chalderan

giance to the chief of Maku.

This clan forms part of the well known Kurdish family of Haideranlu
t ie greater part of whom are Turkish subjects and occupy the country west
ot . Azarbaijan. The lersian Haideranlu became detached from the main
branch about 50 years ago, and settled in the country near Kara Aina a
v.llage which gives its name to a part of the valley of Chalderan They
number about 500 families under the chieftainship of Ta<» har Khan the
son of the leader who headed the migration from Turkey. Kara Aina is
the head-quarters of the tribe. This, and several smaller villages in theneio-h-
bourhood, shelter the various sections in winter. In summer they migrato
to the mountains which, on the west, form the boundary line between Persia
and. lurkey. Tl , ie tribe was of greater importance a few years ago, hut the
hostility of,the chief of Maku drove many of the families into Turkish
territory. Ihey are at constant enmity with the Jelalis and their feuds keep
the frontier in a constant state of uproar. r

This file consists of additions and corrections to the Gazetteer of Persia. Additions and corrections are organised in alphabetical order. Each addition or correction is accompanied by the source of the information.

The corrections are accompanied by a memorandum from the Quarter Master General in India, Intelligence Branch, to the Honourable George Curzon, MP, Carlton Club, London. The subject of the memorandum is given as 'Additions to Gazetteer of Persia, Volumes II to IV.' A note states that they are 'Forwarded for information in continuation of this office No. 3146.I. dated 24th October 1896 by F. G. Cardew, Captain, for Quarter Master General, India.'

Also included (folio 41) are tables of routes within Persia with hours riding time by horse and costs of carriage. In addition there are a number of tables of data. For example, weather observations (ff 53-63), bazar prices (f 109), imports and exports (ff 119-120). Mostly the additions contain supplementary information on the settlements.

Individuals submitting additions include Butcher and Stotherd, Picot and Preece.
