j re or ra, The tenth letter of the Arabic alphabet, and the
twelfth of the Persian. In arithmetic it expresses 200; in alma
nacks it is the astronomical character for the moon ; and in dates
it denotes the month j rabi^uH ukhir. This letter is in
terchangeable with J dal,j ze^jje, J lam, and ^ nun.
v\j ra, An inseparable particle added to Persian nouns, ge
nerally serving to denote the oblique cases. It marks the accu
sative when the word is used definitely; as gulru chid,
He gathered the rose.” It may occasionally be construed by
the particle to, the English sign of the dative; as . ^ (cUj5 ..,»>»

ciees of heaven are accomplishing, no light remains to the eye

khudd rd yak nazar ay sarzc-i dzdid, “ For God’s sake,
one look, O waving cypress!” j!
dard-i ^dshikrd dazcd-i behtar az mu^shuk nlst, “ There
is no remedy for a lover’s pain better than his beloved.” It
denotes possession, in such sentences as this : ^j \^\
dru dah ras-i asp bud, lie had, or possessed ten head of
horses. If ra occurs sometimes with a genitive signification,
it is but seldom, and without good authority; and in the best
authors it is often omitted, and frequently redundant. Rd, con
tracted from the Arabic ^j\j ru-y, signifies, Seeing, as ly
rdshan-rd, Seeing light, i. e. penetrating, wise. \j

losopher. Intent upon. \sj\j rdbitu'ljdsh. Firm-minded.
A rdbitat, A chain, ligature, any thing binding, connect
ing, or regulating. The catch-word, placed at the corner of a
page under the last line, and repeated at the top of the page
which follows. A troop maintaining its post. p^jl^il Alxd i
rdbita-i dshnd-i, The cement of friendship.
A £j\jrdbi^, Fourth. (A camel) thirsting, and drinking every
fourth day. (A fever) returning on the fourth day. Stedfast.

present for any bad act. One who keeps mean or wicked com
pany, to indulge genius or whim.
