old romances of Arabia and Persia allot them a particular coun

name of the second daughter of Darius, whom the Greeks have j
called Parisatis; corrupting in the same manner sitarah (a star) |
into Statira, and roshan (splendor) into Roxana). The DSvas,
or Dews, Jinnsor Genii, are another species of ideal beings, but 1
the reverse of the Purls, being ugly, malignant, and perpe- j
tually at war with them and with mankind, whom the Paris are ^
supposed constantly to protect. These two classes of supcrna- ,
tural creatures form great part of the machinery of Eastern poe- .
try, fable, and romance, and give a most fanciful and extended
