November. First point has resolved itself into the eight

points submitted by Nejd, These are detailed in my immediate-
ly preceding telegram. Progress has been made in drafting
agreement with regard to second point which has been agreed to.
Third and ninth points have been merged and Mejd envoys have
referred to Bin Baud question whether he will accept Iraqi
agent at Kiyadh. Fourth point has been accepted as regards
official correspondence. Complete deadlock has been caused by
draft of Article 2 of the fifth point. Although in principle
it is admitted that neither party haw the right to raise raids
even from its own tribes in the other’s territory, Mejd center#
and Iraq concurs that ?they possess ri^at to sand call to arms.
In such event tribe(g)men may go over of their own free will

and why the call. Iraq^however, says that they must go in that
case with wiver, children and cattle as emssies of Mejd will
luadoo otherwise complain that Iraq is sheltering women, children

insists on such a right. I rather hesitate to ask for a
decision or an expression of opinion on such a fdelicate point.
On condition that seventh point is satisfaetprily settled sixth
point is accepted. Former awaits decision of II.M.
Government on the point whether raiding may be regarded as an
extraditAabJ© offence (see closing lines of my telegram Ho•31

of 18th December. Both sides have accepted eighth point with
slight verbal alteration and agreement diseuseion has been
drafted but large measure of Agreement with regard to ninth
point has been obtained and prospects hopeful but this is still
subject of discussion.

Correspondence, minutes, draft papers, and memoranda relating to the delineation of the boundary between the Kingdom of Nejd and Transjordan Used in three contexts: the geographical region to the east of the River Jordan (literally ‘across the River Jordan’); a British protectorate (1921-46); an independent political entity (1946-49) now known as Jordan . The papers deal with matters such as the status of the Jauf [al-Jawf] region, the idea for a Baghdad-Haifa railway, numerous raids and counter raids along the border area, and the proposal and preparations for a conference in Kuwait to settle the boundary issue.

Correspondence is principally between officials at the India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , Colonial Office, Foreign Office, and Admiralty. Further correspondence, included as enclosures, comes from the High Commissioner in Iraq, HM Consul in Damascus, the Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , the High Commissioner in Palestine, and Ibn Saud [‘Abd al-‘Azīz bin ‘Abd al-Raḥmān bin Fayṣal Āl Sa‘ūd] himself.

  • 'Note on the Trans-Arabian Railway' by Major A C Griffin, Deputy Director of Railways, Iraq, 6 January 1922 (folios 385-405)
  • Memorandum by Harry St John Bridger Philby on his visit to Jauf and his negotiations with tribal leaders there, 27 May 1922 (folios 367-375).

Arrangement

The volume is arranged in chronological order from the back to the front. The subject 450 (Arabia: Nejd-Trans-Jordan Dispute) consists of four parts, IOR/L/PS/10/1033-1034, with part 1 comprising one volume, and parts 2-4 comprising the second volume.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: the main foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 422; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio.
