I was born in Jedda(Hedjaz)and my parents were free
people. When 1 was very young,my father died. After his
death, one of the Sharif s of Mecca by name liuhsin took me on
as a servant. After serving him for one month, he took me
to Vraai Fatimah where his household were then residing ana
sold me to certain bedouins of Harb Tribe. They took me to
Gidaid, a village between iiadinah and Mecca and sold me to
one Sulaiman bin Ahmad, a bedouin in whose service I spent
two years. I was there when Ibn Sau’d declared war against
Hedjaz and captured Gidaid. Although 1 was not fighting
against the Sau’di army,l was taken as a prisoner of war and
despatched to IJejd. I was prsented to one Najdi by name
Suwad bin Faycz in whose service 1 remained for several years
/'•l last,being unable to remain further in his service owing
to the illtreatment which 1 used to receive from him,I
implored him to sell me to another master which he willingly
did. The other master to whom I was sold is a learned man
of Naju wnose name i do not remember now gifted me soon
after to bau'd bin Abdul Aziz al Paisai al bau f d whom 1
served for one year. He then gifted me to Ibn Jeluwi,Amir
of Hasa. whilst I was in the service of Ibn Jeluwi at Hasa,
it happened that one mabruk slave of one Kashid bin Carwash
of Abu Dhabi absconded from his master and made off for
Lingah where he obtained a manumission certificate,thence
to Bahrain and lastly to Hasa. On his arrival at Hasa, he
was enslaved by ibn Jeluwi. This slave’s master, on hearing
the news, cent a ma.n to Hasa in ordef to endevour to take
back the slave. Ibn Jeluwi,desiring to retain the slave
in question with him,he made me over to Hasnid bin qarwash
in place of his original slave and so 1 was despatched to

Many of the items in the file relate to the financial difficulties caused by Gulf's dwindling pearling industry, and the effects this had on the status of region's slaves. The file includes numerous applications made by pearl divers for barwa – documents freeing them of their contractual obligations to their nākhud ā (boat captain). Copies of barwas are included throughout the file. Other correspondence (folios 98-99) raises the issue of pearl divers with debts fleeing from the pearling towns on the Trucial Coast A name used by Britain from the nineteenth century to 1971 to refer to the present-day United Arab Emirates. to Bahrain.

The correspondence and other papers included in the file are arranged in a rough chronological order, as they were received and filed by staff at the Bahrain Political Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. . Office notes at the end of the file (ff 284-339) mirror the chronological order of the correspondence.
